2026 Huning Castle Neighborhood Annual Meeting β Minutes
Wednesday, May 13, 2026 Β· Albuquerque Country Club Banquet Room
The annual meeting covered several topics of importance to the neighborhood and elected new members to serve vacant board seats. Presenters included Carl Christensen (ABCWUA), Commander J.L. Sanchez (APD Valley Area Command), Councilor Joaquin Baca (District 2), and Markella Clinton (Mayor's Office).
Carl Christensen highlighted programs including a $20 rebate for attending live webinars, 25% off (up to $100) for tree care (planting, pruning, mulch), and the xeriscape program offering $3/sq ft for replacing grass with desert-friendly plants. Free irrigation and landscape consultations are available. Visit 505Outside.com or email Askanexpert@abcwua.org.
Councilor Joaquin Baca discussed $3 million in capital outlay from the 2026 legislative session, ongoing budget priorities (transit, animal welfare, city employees), optimism for the downtown Business Improvement District, the likely teardown of the Lindy's building, the Wells Fargo housing conversion (underway and fully funded), potential closure of Silver Street Market, and a promise to review the Wendy's intersection near Central and Lomas for safety. The Rail Trail continues to build despite a $15 million loss of federal funds. Short-term rental legislation failed but will be reintroduced.
Rudy Garcia emphasized bosque fire preparedness β embers can fly as far as a mile. He encouraged neighbors to prepare go bags, know which neighbors need mobility assistance, and maintain fire-wise properties. The City has installed 48 new fire sensors (Montano to CΓ©sar ChΓ‘vez) and drones for fire monitoring. Rudy volunteered joint home visits for perimeter checks.
Commander J.L. Sanchez reported on the effectiveness of Shot Spotter technology, citing the Forest Park incident where bullet casings tied into four cases citywide. He described a recent home invasion case involving a repeat offender and highlighted the role of ACS in handling mental health and non-emergency situations. The Valley Area Command covers a large area with 64 officers across three shifts. Report incidents via 311, 242-COPS, 911, or the Atlas 1 mobile app. Commander Sanchez's direct line: 505-252-2589.
Markella Clinton explained Ordinance 26-14, which includes $500 fines for obstructing sidewalks and two-year safety zones with increased APD and ACS presence. Gateway West was selected for a safe outdoor space for unhoused individuals. Current transportation includes two Sun Vans and regular medical/veterinary transport. Job training and affordable housing preparation are available, with a focus on young adults pursuing education at CNM. Community feedback on the ordinance is encouraged.
