Water Alert

Rio Grande Facing Historically Difficult Water Supply Conditions

Multiple agencies warn of a third consecutive dry year along the Rio Grande. Below-average snowpack and early snowmelt have left most reservoirs below 15% capacity. Parts of the Rio Grande through Albuquerque are expected to experience drying this summer, and residents are urged to conserve water immediately.

Key points from the joint agency statement:

  • MRGCD: Irrigators should expect reduced deliveries and longer wait periods between water availability, especially later in the season.
  • Water Authority: Follow the Water by the Numbers program — water lawns just 2 days/week in April–May, 3 days/week June–August. No sprinkler irrigation between 11 AM and 7 PM, April through October.
  • Bureau of Reclamation: Drying in the San Acacia reach began March 27, the earliest recorded onset in three decades. Most reservoirs are holding less than 15% capacity.
  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: Five threatened and endangered species live in and along the Rio Grande. Rescue efforts for the Rio Grande Silvery Minnow will continue if drying occurs.
